Out of Province Transfers

All vehicles last registered in another province, state or country must first be inspected by an authorized mechanic before being registered in Alberta.

First, bring your vehicle ownership documentation to us. We'll do a Motor Vehicles computer search on the vehicle, set up the vehicle in Alberta's computer files and provide you a Request for Inspection form with a list of authorized mechanics.

Then then take your vehicle to an authorized mechanic for inspection.

Once the vehicle has passed inspection, bring the completed Inspection Certificate back to us within 14 days and we will register the vehicle for you and close out the record from the previous province. In addition to the Inspection Certificate, you will need:

Proof of Ownership (previous registration or Bill of Sale)
Proof of valid Insurance
Alberta Driver's License

If the vehicle is being imported from another country, documentation from Canada Customs is required to prove that the car is eligible for registration. Customs will provide you with the necessary forms when the vehicle first enters the country. For Canadian residents who wish to import a vehicle from the USA or other countries, please visit the web site of the Registrar of Imported Vehicles.

We are delighted to serve ex-Albertans. Once you leave the province, you can no longer renew your Alberta license plates or drivers license.

IMPORTANT! BEFORE LEAVING THE PROVINCE, MAKE SURE YOU OBTAIN YOUR DRIVER'S ABSTACT FROM US. YOU ARE GOING TO NEED IT, AND WILL AVOID INCURRING SIGNIFICANT COSTS BY DOING SO BEFORE YOU LEAVE.

We also handle requests for Land Titles or PPSA searches on Alberta property from investors or creditors outside the province.

Intransit Permits
To move an unregistered vehicle from one location to another in Canada, you must have a permit if the vehicle is being moved outside of Alberta as well as proof of valid insurance. In order to obtain the permit, you must have ownership insurance. Permits are not valid outside of Canada. Important: Complete addresses of where vehicle is leaving from and going to are required.
